Pump Action Pre-Workout Review

Pump Action is a stim-free pump pre-workout supplement from Alpha Phlyte. Fueled by 5 g L-Citrulline, 3 g GlycerPump (™), 1 g Lion’s Mane, and 500 mg Alpha GPC 50%, among others, Pump Actions gives you intense pumps and dialed in focus.

I have taken Pump Action twice, with differing levels of stimulants, and both times, the pumps were magnificent, and the focus was potent. 

I would easily recommend this to those who train later in the day or those who seek a greater pump in their pre-workout.

My Experience

Effects

As this is a pump product, the pumps were (as they should be) incredible. I was able to tackle several sets of 10+ reps of push-ups and had a massive chest pump. 

The focus kept the mind-to-muscle connection incredibly strong. 

No adverse side effects were noted.

Flavor

The flavor I tried was Raspberry Lemonade. It was sweet and not too sour with a slight chalkiness (probably due to the glycerol). I’d give it an 8 out of 10. 

Fruit Punch is the only other available flavor.

Scoop Size

As for the serving size, it states “1 scoop” with no actual specification in grams on the tub. With a total weight of 504-grams and 30 whole servings, a full serving should be 16.8 grams. 

With that being said, pictured below is one flat scoop, which is only 9.1-grams. This means you need a little less than two full scoops to reach a full serving.

Below is what roughly 8.4-grams (half a serving) would look like, just under the second line on the scooper. You’d need two 8.4-gram scoops to make a complete serving.

Pump Action desperately needs a more accurate scooper size.

Pump Action Ingredients

L-Citrulline – 5,000 mg

L-Citrulline is one of the most common pre-workout ingredients. There is extensive evidence to support its ability to increase nitric oxide production, power output, and endurance, making it an essential pump pre-workout ingredient.

Four grams is the clinical dosage of l-citrulline, with Vaso PMP giving you double the dosage.

GlycerPump – 3,000 mg

GlycerPump is a patented form of glycerol powder. Glycerol powder assists with hydration and allows the body to absorb more water than it usually would. This helps stave off dehydration and mildly improves endurance.

The real reason it is often included in pre-workout supplements is that all of this extra water absorption can help your muscles swell up, giving you a “swole” look. This is why glycerol powder is one of the recommended ingredients in our list of the best pump supplements.

Five grams is an incredible dosage for GlycerPump. It usually ranges from 2 to 3 grams per serving in good supplements, giving you far and above the normal range.

One slight side-effect of glycerol is clumping inside the tub. However, I did not find that it clumped too severely.

Betaine Anhydrous – 2,500 mg

Betaine is included to help increase your power output. However, research surrounding this claim is pretty inconsistent. 2.5 grams is a perfect dose of this ingredient, typically between 1.5 g and upwards of 5 g.

Lion’s Mane Extract – 1,000 mg

Lion’s Mane (yamabushitake) is a relatively new nootropic on the scene, with some research supporting anti-anxiety, cognition boosting, and well-being effects.

According to Examine, there has only been a single human study of Lion’s Mane, and the individuals took 1 gram orally three times a day. While that dosage appeared effective, it is unknown if this was optimal.

Pump Action contains a solid 1,000 mg of lion’s mane, and there isn’t enough research available to determine if this is an effective dose for one time. More research is needed for this particular ingredient, but it is promising.

Anecdotally, this is an appropriate dose (depending upon the quality and purity of the ingredient source).

Alpha GPC 50% – 500 mg

L-Alpha GPC creates choline, a molecule associated with increased cognition found naturally in eggs. This is the unique ingredient found in the newest generation of Legion’s Pulse pre-workout(300 mg) and Apollon Nutrition’s Overtime Nootropic (600 mg).

Some early research suggests a notable increase in power output due to  Alpha GPC supplementation. (More info: Examine)

It is unclear if 600 mg is sufficient to achieve cognitive improvements. A 2015 study using 250 mg and 500 mg doses did not observe any measurable cognitive improvements in healthy test subjects.

Additionally, when you see Alpha GPC, it is 300 mg after the yield (so 600 mg before). I’m unsure if the 500 mg is before or after the yield.

L-Norvaline – 150 mg

L-Norvaline is a unique amino acid and a form of the BCAA valine. It is an arginase inhibitor, which helps prevent the breakdown of arginine in the body. This makes the nitric oxide production of citrulline more effective.

Some sources suggest that a standard dose of L-norvaline is between 100 mg and 200 mg or even up to 400 mg, but I am not sure how well supported this claim is (source, source). At 150 mg, it’s within the typical dose you’d see in other pre-workouts.

Huperzine-A (1%) – 200 mcg

Like CDP Choline, Huperzine A is cholinergic and acts as a cognitive enhancer. The occasional dose in other pre-workouts tends to be 50 mcg to 200 mcg. As an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, it helps lengthen the half-life of cholinergic sources (such as Alpha GPC, Citicoline, CDP Choline) (Examine) and keep your focus longer.
